Amazon announced Wednesday it will invest $10 billion to build new data centers in North Carolina, significantly expanding its artificial intelligence infrastructure.
The investment is part of Amazon’s broader commitment to spend up to $100 billion in capital expenditures this year, with a substantial portion allocated to AI-related initiatives. The company, alongside peers such as Microsoft, Google, and OpenAI, is accelerating efforts to scale computing power for advanced AI applications.
The new North Carolina facilities are expected to create 500 jobs and strengthen Amazon Web Services' (AWS) presence in the region. “Generative AI is driving increased demand for advanced cloud infrastructure and compute power, and our investment will support the future of AI from AWS data centers in the Tar Heel State,” Amazon said in a blog post.
Over the past year, Amazon has unveiled a range of generative AI offerings, including proprietary language models, its Trainium AI chips, a shopping assistant, and Bedrock—a platform for third-party AI models. The company has also invested $8 billion in Anthropic, the developer behind the Claude chatbot.
