New agreement paves the way for more direct flights between ASEAN capitals, boosting trade, tourism, and Cambodia’s post-pandemic recovery.

Cambodia has officially signed Protocol 5 under the ASEAN Multilateral Agreement on Air Services during the 30th ASEAN Transport Ministers Meeting, signaling a major step toward improving regional air connectivity. Protocol 5 enables unlimited third and fourth freedom traffic rights between capital cities of ASEAN nations, effectively allowing airlines to operate more direct flights within the region. Cambodian Minister of Public Works and Transport, Peng Ponea, described the move as a “pivotal milestone” in facilitating greater trade, tourism, and economic integration across Southeast Asia. 4xng9hxSpU7XI2OdtLhNHemLD4aMnVRprD7KIgpj.jpg

“Cambodia stands to benefit significantly from increased flight routes and open skies,” he stated, noting that Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and Sihanoukville will become more accessible to travelers and investors from the ASEAN bloc. Experts believe the agreement will help revive Cambodia’s aviation and tourism sectors, both hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, and position the country as a more competitive regional transport hub.
